Rethink Food Partnership Delivers 13,824 Meals—and Stability—to Doe Fund Housing
Last month, millions of low-income Americans were put at risk of food insecurity after their access to critical benefits like SNAP came into jeopardy. Among those impacted were hundreds of residents of The Doe Fund’s affordable and supportive housing, who have finally achieved stability after experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and other hardships.
In response, we sprang into action. We opened the kitchens of our three transitional residences — typically reserved for people residing there while in our Ready, Willing & Able program — to anyone living in our housing who needed access to healthy, delicious, free meals.

That was only the beginning. We also partnered with Rethink Food, a chef-led nonprofit that addresses food insecurity by connecting restaurants, community-based organizations, and food donors to deliver nutritious, culturally celebrated meals where they’re needed most. In just three weeks, Rethink Food provided more than 13,824 chef-crafted meals across our supportive housing sites, including over Thanksgiving. For the individuals and families in our housing who work so hard to rebuild their lives, these meals were nothing short of a lifeline — and a reminder of how New Yorkers look out for one another.
Rethink Food’s partnership was one example of how the organization tripled meal production through its network of restaurants and supporters citywide during the SNAP reductions, ensuring that individuals who rely on consistent support would not lose access to a daily meal.
