Breaking Barriers, Building Futures

Every journey to stability looks different. But for many Ready, Willing & Able trainees, it includes unexpected legal and bureaucratic roadblocks.

That’s where Crystal Ruiz comes in. As The Doe Fund’s Legal Referral Manager, she helps trainees obtain identification, navigate reentry rights, address child support debt, understand reentry, and more.

Crystal works with trainees who are ready to take the next step but are navigating a labyrinthine legal system — whether it’s reinstating a license due to unpaid fines, working through family court matters, or dealing with the lingering impact of a past conviction. “The most rewarding part of my work is the positive impact I can have on others as I assist them in overcoming challenges in criminal justice and family law,” Crystal explains. “Helping people navigate these complex systems allows them to expand their skills and build confidence in their abilities. Witnessing their transformation and knowing that I played a role in that journey is incredibly fulfilling.”

Crystal’s work requires patience, adaptability, and trust. “Many clients come to me with mixed issues, often involving overlapping legal and personal concerns,” she says. “Navigating these complexities while providing effective solutions can be challenging, requiring careful listening, empathy, and tailored approaches.”

No two cases are the same, but each one represents a person trying to move forward and a system that often makes it difficult to do so. Crystal’s role is to make sure trainees aren’t alone in this process — to connect them with legal aid, guide them through complicated paperwork, and give them the tools to advocate for themselves.

The legal system can be overwhelming, but Crystal doesn’t do this work alone. “The culture at The Doe Fund fosters teamwork and collaboration,” she shares. “Colleagues are always willing to share insights, resources, and strategies, which helps us tackle challenging cases collectively. Also, the leadership recognizes the hard work and achievements, which fosters a sense of accomplishment and motivation.”

With this network of support, Crystal can focus on what matters most: ensuring that trainees graduate the program empowered.

For many trainees, gaining legal clarity isn’t just about resolving their past — it’s about securing their future. Crystal sees firsthand how access to legal support transforms lives, giving people the chance to move forward without being defined by their past mistakes.

Her advice for those looking to work in this field? Believe in yourself. “Confidence is key. Trust your abilities, and don’t underestimate your skills or potential,” Crystal says.

Every person Crystal helps is one step closer to lasting stability. With the right resources, guidance, and support, they can finally move beyond the obstacles holding them back.
