A Ready, Willing & Able Valentine
Love has a way of finding us in the most unexpected places — even on the path from homelessness to stability. Through Ready, Willing & Able, Wilbert not only rebuilt his life, but also found the love of his life. This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate his journey: a testament to the power of second chances, perseverance, and a true love that lasts.
When Wilbert thinks about how good life is now, it’s hard for him to remember the 13-year-old runaway stealing bikes and selling drugs, struggling to survive on the streets. But for decades, the cycle of substance abuse, incarceration, and homelessness was his life.
After decades lost to this self-destructive pattern, Wilbert was sick and tired of being sick and tired. He knew he needed to make a big change, but he didn’t know how. That’s when a friend told him about The Doe Fund, and soon after, he decided to commit to Ready, Willing & Able.
It was in the program where Wilbert discovered his passion for learning. He was particularly enthusiastic about computer classes, where for the first time he practiced essential workplace skills like preparing a resume, writing documents, creating and maintaining an email address, and resolving conflicts in a professional environment. Before long, he had secured a full-time job, independent housing, and a renewed sense of purpose. He also reconnected with his family, including his mom, grandkids, and stepdaughters.
This shift in perspective came with a newfound confidence… and it wasn’t long until he put it to good use. Soon after graduating several years ago, he stumbled upon someone working at his local laundromat. “She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen,” Wilbert says. “I know it sounds corny, but it was love at first sight.”
He asked for her name — Robin — then asked her out on the spot. They’ve been together ever since; almost a decade later, their marriage is stronger than ever.
“If I could describe our bond in one sentence, it’d be: loving, caring, and family-oriented,” says Robin. “My favorite thing about Wilbert is that he gives me love. He’s my friend, he’s my husband, he’s everything to me,” she says.
Wilbert credits Ready, Willing & Able with enabling him to focus on sobriety, self-improvement, and healing, which in turn allowed him to be more present in his relationships. “There’s no question that my time with The Doe Fund has made me a better husband and father.”
He hopes that all trainees in the program can find that same openness to learning and ability to focus. His advice is simple: “When you focus on yourself and truly be there for yourself, the program will work for you. Follow the rules, take all the classes, and mind your business. Stay away from negativity, and always be honest with yourself. If you mess up, don’t try to run away from your mistakes. Get back on the horse and try again. The Doe Fund will help you.”
It may even help you find true love.
