Karl’s Journey of Elevation

Recently, we gathered with Karl whose story is a testament to the transformative power of economic opportunity, career training, and the support provided by organizations like The Doe Fund and programs like Ready, Willing & Able. Through hard work and dedication, Karl has not only transformed his own life but also continues to inspire countless others along the way.

Born and raised in Brooklyn amidst challenging circumstances, Karl had to navigate his way through adversity. His determination to change his life led him to Ready, Willing & Able in 2016, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey of resilience and growth.

“It proved to be a very safe and promising endeavor, and I’ve been here ever since,” Karl shared, reflecting on his introduction to Ready, Willing & Able. Karl went on to seize every opportunity for education and vocational training offered by the program, completing it in 8 and a half months.

Upon completing the program, Karl obtained employment outside The Doe Fund and secured permanent housing. However, drawn by the opportunity to utilize his newfound culinary arts skills, he returned to work in the kitchen, providing program participants with delicious, nutritious meals. His dedication and competence soon led him to transition into a recruiter role, where he played a crucial role in bringing individuals with backgrounds similar to his into the program.

“As a recruiter, you’re the gatekeeper of the program,” Karl explained, emphasizing the significance of this role in guiding others toward transformation. His success in this role for two and a half years paved the way for further advancements within The Doe Fund, leading him to a position as a Housing Specialist, “It was a natural transition. If you’re good at bringing guys in, you should be good at helping guys get out,” he told us.

After three and a half years, he was promoted to his current role as a Substance Abuse Case Manager at The Doe Fund’s supportive housing, Crystal Tower residence. Karl works closely with individuals who have experienced homelessness and are facing mental health struggles and substance abuse issues.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, Karl shared this message: “Mental health struggles should not be looked down upon. In fact, when we encounter someone struggling with a mental health crisis, we as professionals should show patience, empathy, and understanding for that individual.”

Karl shared his personal philosophy: “My mantra is to not look down on people who look up to me. That way, I never have to look up to those who look down on me. Everything is on an even keel. Equanimity!”

He continued, “Giving is its own reward. Providing quality care with compassion goes a long way.”

Throughout his journey at The Doe Fund, Karl didn’t just stop at professional growth. He pursued education relentlessly, obtaining his associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. Now, on the cusp of his commencement on May 17, 2024, he has been accepted into the Master of Public Administration program at Metropolitan College. “I’ve been busy since graduating from Ready, Willing & Able. The Doe Fund staff has been so supportive; it’s great to have a support system behind me,” Karl expressed his gratitude for the guidance and encouragement he has received along the way.

As he looks toward the future, Karl remains committed to learning as much as he can clinically and continuing to grow both personally and professionally. He encourages trainees in the program to remain steadfast in their commitment to change and take full advantage of the opportunities and support provided by The Doe Fund.
